Living Books MPC Trouble Shooting Guide

Please read this document before calling our technical support
number if you are having any problems with Living Books.
Just Grandma and Me was tested thoroughly before it
was released, and most of the technical problems we
anticipate users having will be rooted
in device drivers for graphics boards, sound boards,
or CD-ROM drives. Outlined below are
some procedures and resources available to you in
resolving any problems you might be having.

Memory:
Living Books requires 4 Megabytes of random access
memory (RAM) to run. Be sure that any memory managers
you might have running can give Living Books the
memory it needs.

Changing Display drivers:
Broderbund's Living Books require 256 colors. Computer
owners with SuperVGA cards (512k video RAM or higher)
should run in 640x480 mode with 256 colors. To do so,
locate and open the Windows Setup icon, select Change
Settings from the Options menu, then scroll down the pop
up menu (by clicking on the arrow to the right of the
chosen Display) to Other Drivers (supplied by OEM).
Enter the letter designation of your CD-ROM drive.
You should then be able to select the driver to
install. Click on Install, then, when prompted,
choose to restart Windows to complete the process.
You will then be able to begin playing Just Grandma and
Me in the higher resolution mode. In general, you will
not need to return to 16 color mode for other programs, but
if you need to return to 640x480 resolution simply run through
the above procedure, selecting the 16 color 640 x 480 or other
video mode from the pop-up menu.

There are many ways for you to get the most recent
sound and video device drivers. The dealer who sold
you your hardware should have access to the most
recent device drivers. Additionally, most hardware manufacturers
have BBS numbers which enable you to download their
drivers and other information via modem. Most hardware
manufacturers have forums on the on-line services
where you can access their technical support or driver
libraries via modem.

Please make every effort to install the most current
device drivers before calling Broderbund Technical Support because
Broderbund cannot supply third party sound and video drivers.

Microsoft has made available the Windows Driver
Library (WDL). The WDL offers support for many displays,
sound cards and printers not provided with Windows 3.1. If
you have a modem, the drivers are available at no charge on
CompuServe, GEnie, Microsoft OnLine, and the Microsoft
Download Service (MSDL). However, note that standard
connect-time fees and long-distance telephone charges, if
any, will still apply during downloading. When you
connect to any of these services, please read the WDL.TXT file
for downloading instructions and list of devices supported in
the WDL. The phone number for the MSDL is (206) 936-MSDL (6735).
There is no connect-time charge for using this service.

On CompuServe, the WDL is in the Microsoft Software Library,
which can be reached by typing go msl (without quotation marks)
at any system prompt. (To find WDL.TXT, search on S13345.)
On the GEnie and Microsoft OnLine systems the WDL is in the Microsoft
Software Library. (To find WDL.TXT, search on S13345.)

Screen Savers:
While using Living Books you may want to disable any
screen savers that are enabled. This will be true especially
during the Read to Me mode of the story because there
might be no keyboard or mouse activity for an extended period of
time.

Screen Size:
The aspect ratio of Living Books is fixed.
In other words, on most screens there will be a black
border around the book. This is to accommodate the wide variety of
display dimensions in the market.

Accelerators, file compressors, and other peripherals:
Broderbund's Living Books are designed to use the full
abilities of your computer. We strongly suggest that you
not use other programs while playing any of Broderbund's
Living Books, and that you keep other windows closed while
playing. Doing so may significantly affect
the performance of Broderbund's Living Books.
In addition, the performance may vary according to the
capabilities of your CD-ROM drive (as well as your other hardware).

Living Books are designed to be used on standard MPC
configured PCs. This means that during development and
testing, Broderbund was unable to prepare our software for all
operating environments it might encounter. Accelerators, file
compression applications, networked computers, or any
other hardware or software device that is non-standard might
affect the performance of Living Books. If you encounter any
difficulties using Living Books, disable any such devices to
be sure that they are not affecting your performance.
