README for Spectre

Yet another dock! This is my version of a dock for MacOS X, not as sophisticated as the Fiend but nice enough to be usable. And because it almost completely relies on Yellow Box APIs, it should be fairly stable and portable. An OPENSTEP port is trivial but not really useful as Spectre can't steal the application icons from Workspace Manager. A Windows port works but cannot figure out which applications were started before Spectre.

Instructions. Drag your applications and shell scripts onto the Spectre icon and they will be added to the dock. Dragging an icon from the dock onto the Spectre icon will remove it from the dock. Drag a document onto an application icon and Spectre will attempt to open the file with that application. Note, no fiddeling with the Command, Alt, Apple keys! Okay almost none. Alt-click the Spectre icon to toggle the level of the dock. It either floats above all other windows (but below the menu) or it is displayed below all normal windows.

Hacker's section. In the application's resources you'll find three images which define the appearance of the dock, namely `BlankTile,' `LaunchMask' and `NotRunningMask.' You can replace these images if you like. Note that the size of the tiles is taken from `BlankTile.' You can also experiment with different dock levels by setting the corresponding default using the command line tool. Have fun.

Artwork. All artwork was taken from the book `What songs look like. Contemporary artists interpret Talking Heads songs' by Talking Heads and Frank Olinsky, Harper and Row Publishers, 1987. The image used for Spectre was done for `Moon Rocks.'
