This directory contains the OpenKeyServer software.

1. System requirements

The system requirements needed to run OpenKeyServer are proportional to the
amount of public keys in your database and to the frequency of requests to process.

On a highly frequently queried/updated system handling more than 500,000 keys, a
minimum of 170 MB of RAM, 700 MB of hard disk space and an Intel Pentium II 333 MHz
processor or a G3 processor are required to offer short response-time. But for most
common usage, like for an intranet public keys server or for processing small amounts
of queries per second, a less powerful system should be enough.

If you plan to install the web site provided with this distribution, you will also
need to run a web server where you can copy the directories containing the HTML pages
composing the web site. This web server is not provided within this distribution, but
we recommend you to use the latest Apache version available at http://www.apache.org.

If you want to synchronize your OpenKeyServer with other public keys servers or be able
to query it through the email interface, you will also need to run a mail server
supporting the SMTP and POP3 protocols and providing your public keys server with its
own email address and its own mailbox.

2. Installation

Before beginning the installation of your OpenKeyServer, you must know the base URL of
your (future) public keys server web site even if you do not want to install the web
site provided in this distribution. This base URL will be needed during the installation
in order to personalize the web pages generated by the keyserver (e.g. updating links).

The email address, POP3 login and POP3 password of your public keys server account on
your mail server are also required only if you want to use the email interface of the
OpenKeyServer or if you want to synchronize it with other public keys servers.

To begin the installation, just type './oks_install' into the current directory. The
installation script will untar your distribution into the directory you specified and
begins to configure your keyserver. In case of reinstallation, the configuration script
will reuse the parameters set during the previous installation.

The INSTALL file located in the current directory contains instructions and detailed
information about the installation procedure.

3. Manual

You will find the HTML manual of OpenKeyServer into the /info directory provided
in this distribution. If your server is not installed yet, you will find this directory
into the tar file located into the current directory.
