IMPORTANT PRE-INSTALLATION NOTES
------------------------------------------------------------------

    Pre-Installation Requirements
    -----------------------------

    1. You must have OS/2 DOS Support installed in order to
install this driver. You must also have OS/2 REXX Support
 	installed.

    2. The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation. If
you elected not to install the OS/2 System Utility
Programs or you have deleted the ATTRIB command, you must
use Selective Install to restore the ATTRIB command before
	continuing.

    Warning
    -------

       SPECIAL CASES:

#9GXE with OS/2 version 2.1 (no Service Pack)

To install the #9GXE HawkEye Feature Set for use in
full-screen WIN-OS/2, you will need to return your
WIN-OS/2 setup to VGA. Full-screen Windows under OS/2
is supported with the #9GXE Windows Driver version 4.15.
This driver can only be installed when full-screen
WINDOWS under OS/2 is in VGA mode.

If you previously installed SVGA support, return to VGA
mode using the new SETVGA procedure found in the NEW
SETVGA PROCEDURE section near the end of this read_me
	file.

The file WIN.INI should be edited to remove HAWKEYE.EXE
from the LOAD= line. HawkEye may be launched once
WIN-OS/2 has been completely started, but NOT from the
	WIN.INI file.

OTHER #9 BOARD AND OS/2 VERSION COMBINATIONS:

	#9GXE with OS/2 version 2.11 or 3.0

This video accelerator driver release is compatible with OS/2 2.1
or later. Do not attempt to install it on previous versions of
OS/2.

To install this #9 video accelerator driver from diskette:

    1. Place this diskette into drive A (or another diskette
        drive).

    2. Open the "OS/2 System - Icon View" folder.

    3. Open the "Command Prompts" folder.

    4. Open an "OS/2 Full-Screen" or "OS/2 Window" session.

    5. At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following command:

        A:GXEINST A: C:

where: A: is the diskette drive
C: is the drive where OS/2 2.1 is installed

This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2
        drive.

If you are prompted to replace the files DISPLAY.DLL and
PMVIOP.DLL, answer "NO". These files should NOT be
        overwritten.

    6. Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a
shutdown, and then restart the system.

    7. Open the "OS/2 System" folder.

    8. Open the "System Setup" folder.

    9. Open the "Display Driver Install" (DSPINSTL) object.

NOTE: If the Display Driver Install object is
missing, refer to the "Important Note For
BBS Users" at the top of this section.

When the Display Driver Install window appears,
"Super Video Graphics Array (S3)" should be the default
	choice. Select "OK".

DSPINSTL displays the following list of supported adapters:

		32 Bit #9GXE Display Drivers
		32 Bit #9GXE64 Display Drivers
		32 Bit #9GXE64Pro Display Drivers

Select the adapter that matches your #9 board type.

When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility window
appears, the "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type"
option is preselected. ACCEPT THIS OPTION.

(The #9GXE, #9GXE64 and #9GXE64Pro do not use a Display
	 Adapter Utility Program.)

The screen will turn black momentarily while your display
is checked. If you have an energy-saving monitor, you may
need to turn it off and then on again.

DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating
the SVGADATA.PMI file on the drive where the OS2 directory
        is located.

   10. When the source directory pop-up window appears

	- if you are installing for the #9GXE, insert the #9GXE
32-bit OS/2 Display Driver diskette and select Install.

	- if you are installing for the #9GXE64 or #9GXE64Pro,
when DSPINSTL prompts you, insert the the corresponding
	  second diskette and select Install.

Make sure you use the correct diskette for your video
        board.

   11. Remove the diskette from the diskette drive, perform a
shutdown, and then restart the system.

   12. When the installation is complete, do the following:
         a. Open "OS/2 System".
         b. Open "System Setup".
         c. Open the "System" object. The Screen page of the
Settings notebook lists all the supported resolutions
             for your configuration.
         d. Select a resolution; then, close the notebook.

    13. Perform a shutdown; then, restart the system.

    14. After installing this driver release, if you must
re-install OS/2, be sure to delete the following
files from your \OS2\INSTALL directory FIRST!!!

			PSS3.DSC
			GXE64.DSC
    			GXE64P.DSC

The OS/2 installation will not complete if these
	 files are present.

------------------------------------------------------------------
INSTALLING THE REFRESH UTILITY
------------------------------------------------------------------

This driver set includes an OS/2 utility to configure the refresh
rate of your #9 board under OS/2.

To install this utility, insert the #9GXE Display Driver Disk 2
(or the corresponding disk 2 for the #9GXE64 or #9GXE64Pro boards)
in a diskette drive and type:

        A:OBJINST A: C:

where: A: is your diskette drive
C: is the drive on which OS/2 is installed

The Number Nine GXE object will appear in your System Setup folder.
Selecting the Number Nine GXE object will open a window listing
supported refresh rates for the current resolution and color depth.

After selecting a new refresh rate, you will need to perform a
shutdown and then restart the system.

------------------------------------------------------------------
FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS
------------------------------------------------------------------

o A General Protection Fault may occur while loading
Ventura Publisher** for Windows unless the load is
performed at a 256 color resolution.

o A General Protection Fault may occur, when using
WordPerfect** 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows, if the
"Print Preview" option is selected while at a resolution
	of 800x600 by 65,536 colors.

o Users of the software motion video feature of MMPM/2
should expect satisfactory results in 256-color modes.
However, in 65,536 color modes, users of the feature will
experience unusual results. An OS/2 pervasive fix package
will be available electronically from IBM.

In addition, the software motion video feature will take
advantage of a 1MB aperture on video adapters and systems
where it is available to improve the performance of video
 	playback in 65,536 color modes.

	#9 PCI Card Users Only:
	-----------------------

For those systems with non-standard locations, the actual
physical address of the aperture must be provided in the
	following CONFIG.SYS statement:

               SET VIDEO_APERTURE=xxxh

where "xxx" is a hexadecimal value in units of 1MB,
representing the actual physical address to map to the
aperture. For PCI cards xxxh=880h. Therefore, the
	CONFIG.SYS statement should read:

               SET VIDEO_APERTURE=880h

NOTE: VLB cards do not require this CONFIG.SYS
	modification.

------------------------------------------------------------------
BEFORE CONTACTING NUMBER NINE TECHNICAL SUPPORT
------------------------------------------------------------------

 Installation Problems

During the installation of this driver a DISPLAY.LOG file
is created in the OS2\INSTALL directory. This file
identifies the OS/2 system files that were updated and
indicates whether the installation was successful. The
contents of this file might be useful if you need to report
an installation problem to Number Nine Technical Support.

 OS/2 2.11 (or later) Installation

Note that this release includes patches to the OS/2 2.1
kernel and virtual Windows driver, which are required to
support the new 32-bit S3 driver architecture.

If you are running OS/2 2.11 the patches in this package
are not necessary. Thus, under OS/2 2.11, or with the
Pentium patches under OS/2 2.1, the installation program's
attempt to patch the kernel will fail. This failure will
be recorded in DISPLAY.LOG, and is normal! It does not
indicate a failure to correctly install the drivers.

To contact Technical Support, please refer to the CONTACTING NUMBER
NINE COMPUTER CORPORATION section near the top of this README file.
