This diskette contains updated Windows 3.1 and Adapter Interface device drivers.
It contains a new AutoCAD device driver compatible with AutoCAD release
11 and 12. Various XGA utilities and VESA drivers are also provided.

For details of specific changes to drivers, please see the READ.ME files in
the appropriates subdirectories.

This diskette contains the following:
------------------------------------

READ.ME - This READ.ME information file
INSTALL.EXE - Install program
EXPAND.EXE - Used to expand compressed files

\ACAD - Subdirectory for the device driver for AutoCAD
\DIFINST - Subdirectory for XGA DMQS Display Information File
\WINV31 - Subdirectory for XGA device driver for Microsoft Windows 3.1
\XGAPCDOS - Subdirectory for the DOS Adapter Interface driver
\VESA - Subdirectory for the XGA and Super VGA VESA drivers
\APM - Subdirectory for the Advanced Power Management DOS and
                Windows software for XGA

Because of diskette space considerations the APM software is compressed
in a self-extracting ZIP file. To install the APM software create a subdirec-
tory on your hard disk, and extract the APM software ( GAPMDISK.EXE )
into that subdirectory, for example:

	C:
	CD\
	MD XGAAPM
	A:\APM\GAPMDISK C:\XGAAPM

Once the files are extracted, follow the instructions in the README.APM

For further information and installation instructions look at the README file
in the appropriate subdirectory.

Installation Problems.
---------------------

If you have less than 500k of base memory available to DOS programs, then
option 1) on the main menu ( shown below ) may produce an error.

1) Install/Update XGA DMQS Display Information File(s)

If an error occurs, go to the \DIFINST directory on the installation
diskette and run the program DIFINST as an alternative to selecting this menu
option.

Important Note for IBM PS/2 users with XGA on the system board.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Video Device Conflict errors with EMM386 or other Expanded Memory Managers
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

This problem occurs in particular on the following IBM machines with integral
XGA--IBM PS/2 Models 8590, 9590, 9556, and 9557, IBM PS/2-E, and IBM Industrial
Computer Models 7537 and 7546-A11.

It has become more prevalent since DOS 5.0.

Instructions for EMM386 configuration to prevent EMM386 from conflicting
with XGA are given here.

This problem is caused by the EMM386.SYS or EMM386.EXE incorrectly
attempting to appropriate the XGA adapters memory mapped registers
region for its expanded memory or upper memory management.

When the XGA driver attempts to claim access rights to its own memory
mapped registers, Windows detects that this area of system memory has
already been claimed by EMM386, and the result is a Video Device
Conflict error.

The EMM386 X= option can be used to tell EMM386 what areas to avoid.

Proceed as follows :

    1) Run the System Configuration Program and select Display Memory Map.
On some systems this is done by pressing Ctl-Alt-Ins when the text
cursor moves to the right side of the display during a re-boot.
Alternatively, the System Configuration Program is run from the
    System Reference Diskette.

To display the memory map, select Set Configuration, and then select
Display Memory Map. On some systems the memory map will specifically refer
to XGA or XGA-2. On others, such as the PS/2 Model 90, the allocation will
be described as "Built in Features".

Identify the area of System Memory reserved for the XGA Video Adapter,
    (for instance 8K at C600).

2) Modify the EMM386 invocation in CONFIG.SYS, and add the following
    option:

    X=C600-C7FF (for example)

So that the line now reads (for example)

    DEVICE=EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=C600-C7FF

Replace C600-C7FF by the actual location figures for your XGA Video
Adapter, as found in Step 1.

If you have a memory manager other than EMM386, proceed as above but
consult your memory manager documentation for details of how to
    exclude the required memory area.

Video Device Conflict errors without Expanded Memory Managers
-------------------------------------------------------------

If you experience Video Device Conflict Errors without having a memory
manager loaded. Or, if when attempting to run Windows, you are returned
to the DOS prompt without any warning message, it is possible that there
is an Enhanced Mode memory conflict between Windows internal memory
    management and XGA.

To confirm this, run Windows in standard mode by typing WIN /S

If Windows runs successfully in standard mode then proceed as below.

Identify the region of memory claimed by XGA in the same way
as described above when an Expanded Memory manager is present.
Then using a text editor, edit the SYSTEM.INI file in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM
subdirectory. Under the [386Enh] section insert the following line

    EMMExclude=C600-C7FF

( for example ). Replace C600-C7FF in the line above by the actual area
of memory occupied by XGA on your system.
